LTD Series

Available in 18" and 20" Crash-Ride models and matching 14" Hi-Hats, the LTD Series from the TRX Cymbal Co. has been designed to offer drummers several improvements over the sound and performance of previously available Crash-Rides and Hi-hats. The LTD Series employs three types of finishing processes to enhance the two types of sounds that are characteristic of the popular, dual-purpose cymbals.

During the course of their ongoing research into cymbal performance, TRX master cymbalsmiths recognized that modifying the three main areas of a cymbal— the edge, bell and face— can greatly influence its acoustical output. By developing a unique combination of manufacturing methods that optimize each zone’s sonic impact they were able to create the LTD series.

The outer edge of LTD Crash-Ride cymbals features a heavily polished finish that adds more brightness and explosiveness to the crash component of the sound while the bell of the cymbal is has a natural finish to increase the definition and articulation of the ride sound. Having played the drums since 8 years old, Jerry played his first gig at 14 years old and by 18 was playing the drums on the Gloria Gaynor tour. He is an incredibly versatile drummer and has played with a variety of top Jazz, pop and gospel acts including the Mercury Award winning Ms Dynamite, Jamelia, A1 and Courtney Pine. He recently played a promo tour with Tina Turner and is currently preparing for a summer festival tour with Will Young. He has just recorded a DVD with Jamelia and also a DVD for the Fame academy tour.

-What is it you like so much about playing Pearl Drums?
What I truly love about the drums that pearl make, I can only put into 1 word…. “solid” & that’s concerning the sound & hardware. Very nice.

-Which drummer/band influenced you most into playing drums?
There are so many drummers that influenced me!! Well, I would say uncle Jim, my brother Nicky, Vinnie Colaiuta & Joel smith. Dennis played a good part in it too.

-Who in your mind are the drummers of tomorrow?
In my mind, the drummers & drums of tomorrow will not only be rhythmic but it will have a strong harmonic vibe that it’ll bring a new identity to the “drum table”

-What do you like most about being a drummer?
We get to sweat on stage.

-What is the worst thing to happen to you during a show?
Please don’t ask, I’m still having nightmares…. hard disk drives!!

-What do you practice and for how long?
I practise most days playing & lot’s of listening. Also, I’ve always loved watching live shows, so whatever artist I’m listening to or watching, I’ll checkout the guy or lady on kit & percussion.

-What is your best advice to a young player wanting to make it in this industry?
Well, giving advise to young drummers who want to make it in the industry is really hard because times change, but what I would say is be the best that you can be. Listen to everything, learn all styles, never stop until you find your person on the instrument, be cause I believe that is what draws other folk to you. Be flexible & just be cool in your conversation & vibe, I think if you can hang, you’ll stay on gig!

-If you had the chance to play drums for another artist who would it be?
Donny Hatheway, James Cleveland. Hendrix, jamming with Bob Marley, you know what I’m saying right?? I know it won’t happen down here so who knows….


Motley Crue blasts from the past, still satisfies at BJCC Arena

Motley Crue, Sunday night at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. With Hinder, The Last Vegas and Theory of a Deadman. Review rating: Three out of five stars.
OK, so they've aged a few years since this photo was taken. But Motley Crue has stuck around, adapted and survived.

Motley Crue is a blunt instrument -- the musical equivalent of a sledgehammer, battering ram or blowtorch. The tools in its arsenal aren't subtle, but they are effective, especially if listeners have a fondness for hard-rock bands that came to prominence in the 1980s.

The Crue performed exactly as expected on Sunday night in Birmingham, headlining a multi-act show at the BJCC Arena. The four-man group steamrolled through some hits and some new songs, surrounded by blazing lights, showers of fireworks, fountains of flames and sexy-babe videos.

Forget the Oscars; fans came out in force to hear singer Vince Neil, drummer Tommy Lee, bassist Nikki Sixx and guitarist Mick Mars. Can't accuse the foursome of phoning it in, either -- each musician worked hard throughout the 9:20 p.m. set, and the crowd responded with roaring enthusiasm.

Great art? Nah. But there's definitely an audience for heavy rock, metal and hair-glam in Birmingham. Motley Crue, touring with all four original members, fit the bill with gusto.

The band's primary set, about 90 minutes' worth, included "Saints of Los Angeles" and "White Trash Circus," both pulled from the Crue's latest disc. (Even Neil admitted that the latter song, with its rip 'em up, party-hearty lyrics, makes the group seem heavy on testosterone and low on brainpower.)

But did anyone present expect a thoughtful analysis of life or, heaven forbid, a Ph.D dissertation? Tapping into primal emotions -- and spurring massive energy release -- always has been this band's stock in trade. Motley didn't stint on that score with "Shout at the Devil," "Same Old Situation, "Girls, Girls, Girls," "Primal Scream," "Kickstart My Heart," "Looks That Kill" and a cover of "Jailhouse Rock."

Shouted expletives are a given when Motley performs; some of the songs and much of the onstage patter was peppered with them. (Parents who brought children to the concert must have known they'd be dodging F-bombs.)

Despite the fresh material, Motley's show had a ritualistic quality that obviously was very satisfying for devotees. Neil, Lee, Mars and Sixx have been mining this vein since 1981, after all -- let's not get into the fights and splits of the 1990s -- so they should have the attitude, riffs and showmanship down pat.

The trick, of course, is balancing mature energy with macho nostalgia, evoking the past without showing resignation or betraying boredom. On this tour, an older and wiser Motley Crue appears to be walking that tightrope with vigor.

Isbell heads in another direction

A song like ``No Choice in the Matter,'' a heavy, horn-studded soul ballad off Jason Isbell’s new album, is a reminder of what a tender songwriting talent the Drive-By Truckers lost when the band and Isbell parted ways in April 2007.
But as both Isbell and the Truckers would be more than happy to point out – likely for the hundredth time – the past is the past. And Isbell is now two albums deep with his 400 Unit, a valiant and exciting rock outfit that blends soul, alt-country, rock and R&B.
``I’m bothered by any question I’ve heard 1,000 times, but I’m not bothered by people asking me about that time because I was really happy with the work we did, for the most part, and I don’t mind thinking about that stuff,'' Isbell said, referring to his six-year tenure as a Trucker. ``I just don’t want it to be a situation where that was the most important thing that I ever do. Honestly, I don’t think that’s going to happen – I’ll continue to make music and continue to do the things I do now. But this album will help lead that in the right direction, simply because there’s nothing on this album that sounds like a Truckers song. And I plan on continuing in that vein, not to isolate myself from the Truckers sound but just because I’m more interested in other things.''
Isbell and his 400 Unit – a crack band comprised of three Alabama natives, bassist Jimbo Hart, guitarist Browan Lollar, and most recent recruit, drummer Chad Gamble, and a Baltimore transplant and former Son Volt sideman, keyboardist Derry DeBorja – return to T.T. The Bear’s Place in Cambridge tonight.
Towing a healthy catalog of Isbell originals and a few stray covers already, the band will also draw on the entire new album, which apart from being on a short list for one of the year’s best is perhaps most fascinating for the way Isbell mines familiar themes – traumatized soldiers, hardscrabble upbringings, barstool philosophers, relationships that turn bad and break down worse – and wrings excitement, emotion and new resonance out of them.
It’s something he did for years with the Truckers, and not a talent to take lightly – the more you indulge his songs, from the resignedly angry ``No Choice In the Matter'' to the defiant ``However Long'' to the ominous ``Soldiers Get Strange,'' the more they push back and get under your skin. Well-chosen collaborators – among them Centro-matic’s Matt Pence, who co-produced, engineered and played drums on the album – fill in the rest.
``We’re mostly a band of sculptors,'' Isbell offers. ``We’re a couple different kinds of players, but we’re all people who like to start with a lot and sculpt away til they get to what’s at the center of a part or song. We’re also people who like to build from the ground up. I like that. It’s something that makes for an easy and direct communication between me and the other guys.''
His own songwriting techniques, Isbell said, haven’t changed all that much, but he’s learned to take his time.
``I feel like I’m getting a little bit better at refining,'' he said. ``There are fewer lines on this album that make me cringe, I guess. [Laughs] If I’m in a bar with a bunch of other people and my songs are playing, normally that really bothers me, but this one’s a lot easier to listen to. I spend a little more time on songs than I used to, and I’m getting better at production for sure – I know how to get certain sounds.''
The characters in his songs aren’t fantasy constructions, either, which suggests why they sound for the most part so fully realized.
``I do try to attack ’em from different angles. Rather than try to tell a specific story in a linear way like I often did with the Truckers, I think it serves a purpose to mix and match and put different characteristics in songs,'' Isbell explained.
``It’s more interesting to me if you build a Frankenstein’s monster out of different people you know and stories you’ve heard. But every line on the album is something that happened to me, or something I heard about.''

3PLAY on song at Madden's Bar


MUSIC fans are in for a real treat at Madden's Bar this Friday night.
If you like your blues, with a touch of Cream, Peter Green and Rory Gallagher, then you'll love 3PLAY, a band comprising three musicians with both history and pedigree.

What is remarkable is that they have not until now played as the power trio which they are set to become.

Albert Mills needs no introduction to those with a love of classic rock and blues. The bassist/vocalist was a stalwart of the now legendary Light in the Seventies, further combining with Jim Armstrong and John Wilson in the fondly remembered and respected Jim Armstrong Band. His impressive CV also reveals a period with Eric Bell and other luminaries of the rock pantheon.

Eddie McKee's place in Northern Ireland's impressive musical inheritance was assured as drummer with Richmond Hill and Zip Code, also periodically sitting in with the Jim Armstrong Band. More recently, Eddie has been a regular with the evergreen Otis and the Elevators.

Belfast man Peter Spratt played guitar for two other legendary bluesmen, sadly no longer with us. Jim Daly was a demanding leader of his own hugely respected blues ensemble, within which a number of musicians were lucky enough to cut their early musical teeth. But it was with the sorely missed and much loved Jim Gilchrist that Peter is most obviously associated, with whom he shared the stage for several years in the Eighties. Indeed, it was the tragic death of Jim which planted the seeds for 3PLAY, as the tribute gigs of three years ago reunited Peter with Albert after a period of over 20 years.

Expect blues when 3PLAY perform at Madden's Bar, Antrim, this Friday, February 27 and again on March 6.

— Yamaha Drum Artists Appear at Prestigious Event —

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Ndugu Chancler and Dafnis Prieto joined a distinguished lineup of top drumming talent at the Modern Drummer Festival 2008, produced by Modern Drummer magazine.

Chancler, the beat behind Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," has also played with Santana, Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis. He performed a melodic solo on his new PHX kit, which arrived at the show directly from the factory, and addressed the audience to offer advice without missing a beat.

The trail-blazing Prieto appeared with his sextet and gave a tour de force performance on his Maple Custom kit. Born in Cuba, Prieto moved to New York and began playing with jazz artists Eddie Palmieri, Henry Threadgill and Michel Camilo.

Produced since 1987 and held for the first time at the Purchase College Performing Arts Center in Purchase, N.Y., the two-day festival presented a roster of today's top drumming talents, representing a variety of popular musical styles.

The second Trailblazer set will come with a 24-in. bass drum, a 12-in tom, a 16-in. floor tom and a 14-in. x 6.5-in. 10-lug steel snare drum. PHX Kit Unleashes a New Era for Yamaha Drums

— New Ultra High-End Drum Set Pushes Musical Boundaries —


ANAHEIM, Calif. — Not resting after celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Yamaha Drums will begin its push to further drumming innovation over the next 40 years when it introduces its ultra high-end PHX Drum Set at Winter NAMM 2008.

In Yamaha's quest to continually expand the boundaries of musicality for drummers, the company used newfound Asian woods to create the PHX kit.

"These particular woods, jatoba and kapur, have never before been used to make drums, and when you put them together in a specific combination, they produce an amazing musical tone," says Dave Jewell, marketing manager, Yamaha Drums, Pro Audio & Combo Division. "We've discovered one of nature's secrets."

In addition to sounding great, the 11-ply shells are a sight to behold. The center ply, jatoba, is an extremely hard wood that provides the drum's core note. On either side are four plies of kapur, which is a softer wood than jatoba. The inner and outer plies of the shell are customized, using maple or a combination of a burled ash outer ply and a maple inner ply.

The concept behind the PHX shell construction is to use the hardest wood in the middle surrounded by softer plies of wood; this produces a sonic "ripple effect" similar to the sound a pebble creates with waves when dropped in water.

"The trend today is thin shells, but frankly, these drums—made with this specific wood combination — do not sound 'thick,'" said Jim Haler, product manager, Yamaha Drums. "They go against every sonic standard of a thick shell."

Joe Testa, Yamaha Drums international artist relations manager, added that "We brought these drums into the studio with some of our top artists, and the difference is astounding. I describe it this way: when most drums are struck, the sound comes from them and hits you. With this kit's sound, it hugs you. Imagine your current Yamaha sound with a natural preamp on it. Generally, a kit's sound improves with age. On the PHX, the aging process seems to be accelerated. Within just a week of playing it, the sound matured immensely. It really is beautiful."

Not only is the shell construction a new venture for Yamaha, the kit's new and improved mounting system is, too. Developed to make the fundamental tone of each drum clearer and better defined, the wooden tom mount, combined with shock-mountable rubber contact points, provides ultimate resonance. As with all Yamaha drums, the mounting points are positioned at the nodal points of the shell.

The newly designed detachable lugs are mounted where the overtones are the highest. The balance of the nodal point mount and the overtone point of the lugs help mute unwanted overtones, making the fundamental tone come alive with much more clarity.

"The PHX was not made to replace our current high end drums, but rather to supply drummers with another musical voice in their arsenal," said Jewell. "Yamaha Drums will continue to create instruments that further a musician's capability to create better music. We pride ourselves in being the choice for those serious about their music."

Available with chrome or gold hardware and in nine impressive finishes (four maple, five in burled ash), the PHX drumset is expected to ship in March 2008.

In a newly-filmed segment on The Hub, Yamaha Drum Artist Teddy Campbell lets loose on a Stage Custom drum kit, though he generally plays an Absolute Birch Nouveau. After discussing Yamaha's ease of set up and great tone, he knocks out a monster groove. Campbell, the house drummer for American Idol, has also worked with Queen Latifah, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock.

Henrique De Almeida releases new instructional DVD

Seasoned drumming expert and director of the Percussion Institute of Colorado, Henrique De Almeida has created a DVD that provides an in-depth exploration of the Moeller technique for drumming. Named for drummer Sanford A. Moeller, this method has been popularized by Moeller student Jim Chapin since the 1930s.

Drawn from Civil War-era drumming, the Moeller method combines a variety of techniques with the goal of improving hand speed, power, and control while offering the flexibility to add accented notes at will. Almeida explores the various uses of the Moeller technique in a wide range of drumming styles, providing demonstrations and detailed explanations.

Donny Gruendler releases new instructional DVD

Phil Rudd of AC/DC


For over three decades Phil Rudd has been the driving force behind AC/DC, the mega popular Rock'n'Roll band that owns the bragging rights to having the highest selling discography in music history. After an eight year break from the studio, the high-voltage group released their latest album "Black Ice" on October 20th which instantly shot to #1 on the charts.



Phil Rudd, as a drummer that hardly needs any explanation, is the driving force behind this unique band that never really seemed to care about any trends. Maybe they did, but just in their very own way and thus creating a huge world-wide following of fans, enthusiasts and tribute bands of endless variations and almost unimaginable names.

Phil's trademark style of playing such as "The Jack" and "Ride On", or deep-pocket shuffles like "There's Gonna Be Some Rockin’" and the never forgettable pounding anthems like "Back In Black" or "Highway To Hell" set the benchmark for so many years. linear drumming basics




A good place to start when beginning the Linear Drumming concept would be to first work with beats you already know (and can play). Beginning at this point will definitely help with gaining a deeper understanding of the style/technique and future progress. Take a simple groove that only involves hi-hat, snare and kick drum, like this "traditional" slow funk beat. (see Fig. 1)

The original funk groove in Fig.1 is horizontal in nature because there are two surfaces, the hihat and snare drum, which sound at the same time. This unison stroke is often referred to as a "double stop" or "flat flam". NOTE: Be sure you can play Fig.1 before moving on. Play Fig.1 again ... MINUS the hihat part. Once you can do this, fill in the gaps that you hear between the snare and kick drum by using the hihat. The idea being that only one instrument plays at a time; you never strike two surfaces at once. By definition, linear means "to draw a line" or "move across", so if done correctly it would look like Fig. 2.

Now this is just a basic way to begin learning how to apply Linear Drumming to your playing. If you can take all the beats you already know, apply the linear concept to them, you'd be surprised just how many cool grooves you have at your disposal.

The concept behind Linear Drumming is nothing new really. Twentieth century composers in the 1950's used a technique called "serialism" which gave rise to "pointillism" (or linear). Points of sound where displaced throughout the orchestra creating a linear motion. Think of taking the tune "Mary Had A Little Lamb", assigning a different note of the melody to a different instrument in the orchestra. When performed, the melody line would be bouncing all over the place, from instrument to instrument ... moving across the orchestra ... linear.
